Mr Browson has recently returned from the United States where he was invited to attend the Arthrex Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Technology and Innovation Forum. This is an invitation only meeting to key opinion leaders, mainly based in the United States but including surgeons from European Countries. Mr Brownson was one of four UK surgeons invited to the forum.
All aspects of shoulder surgery were discussed on the first day whilst the second day focused on knee surgery.
It was interesting to note that there was rising concern over the role of Proprionibacterium Acnes infection and how this relates to potential poor outcomes following surgery and the difficulties of diagnosing this low grade infection, which has only reached prominence in orthopaedic literature in the last few years.
Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA)
The arthroscopy association of North America is one of the largest orthopaedic specialty societies in the world and focuses on arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery. The society holds an annual meeting in the United States where typically there will be 10,000 delegates in attendance. Each morning of the meeting there are a series of instructional course lectures covering all of the major joints in the body. In the last two years AANA has invited speakers from a guest nation to attend with a delegation of leading surgeons who might present at these instructional course lectures. Professor John Richmond, the current president of ANNA, has invited Mr Brownson to form a UK delegation to attend the 2017 AANA meeting in Denver.
BESS Annual Conference 2016 Dublin:
In June 2016, Mr Brownson attended the British Elbow and Shoulder Society annual conference in Dublin. Mr Brownson was responsible for moderating a number of sessions at this meeting in his role as vice President and in the sports surgery session on Friday afternoon, Mr Brownson was one of the international faculty invited to speak on traumatic shoulder instability in the elite athlete.
During this session, Mr Brownson presented his and his physiotherapy colleague, Jo Gibson’s results on accelerated rehabilitation following shoulder surgery in elite soccer players. At the same session, there were presentations relating to the management of elite rugby players from Eanna Falvey (RLFU senior team physician 2009-2016 and 2013 British and Irish Lions Tour team doctor), Gareth Farrell (Head physiotherapist Leinster Rugby Club) and Hannan Mullett, (Consultant orthopaedic surgeon Dublin, Ireland). The session was completed by a presentation from Andrew Wallace (Fortius Clinic London) on the management of SLAP tears in elite cricketers.
Liverpool Upper Limb Unit – An Instability Master Class
On 12th and 13th May 2016, Mr Brownson together with his colleagues in the Liverpool Upper Limb Unit, hosted an international course on the management of shoulder instability.
There was an international faculty of speakers invited to present including Dr Bursconi a world expert in shoulder surgey who is a close friend of Mr Brownson’s and also the lead physician for the Boston Red Sox baseball team. The course was extremely well received and has now become an established annual event.
Steven Copeland Memorial’ Reading Shoulder Course.
In March 2016, Mr Brownson was an invited speaker at the ‘Steven Copeland Memorial’ Reading Shoulder Course. This was an international conference organised in Reading in memory of the late Steven Copeland. Mr Copeland was a leading light in shoulder surgery and was famous both nationally and internationally for his expertise. During his career, Mr Copeland and Mr Brownson formed a strong bond both professionally and socially.
At the meeting, Mr Brownson gave a presentation entitled ‘Is there a place for surgery in type II/III shoulder instability’. The lecture provided a surgeon’s viewpoint as to the role of surgery in treating multidirectional (non traumatic) shoulder instability and was aimed principally at physiotherapists.
In addition, Mr Brownson gave a presentation entitled ‘Traumatic shoulder instability – when/how and why to repair’. This lecture provided an overview on the management of traumatic shoulder instability and was based on the Patient Care Pathway produced by the British Elbow and Shoulder Society for which Mr Brownson was the lead author.
Royal London Hospital Orthopaedic and Trauma Society lecture
Mr Brownson was delighted to receive an invite to lecture recently at the Royal London Hospital Orthopaedic and Trauma Society.
The event at Kensington Roof Gardens on 4th July brought together a number of high level Orthopaedic surgeons from around the country to lecture on current and relevant subjects.
The RLHOT was initially “established with the specific aim of maintaining the standards of the past and setting the standards for the future” in Orthopaedic surgery and its continued development.
Mr Brownson spoke on ‘The management of first time shoulder dislocations in contact
Athletes’ and was delighted to address the attendees who included trainers, trainees from the Royal London Hospital Orthopaedic Department and a number of recognised surgeons.
New BESS Shoulder Care Pathways
The BESS (British Elbow and Shoulder Society) have recently developed National Guidelines in the form of Care Pathways for three common shoulder conditions:
– Traumatic anterior shoulder instability
– Frozen Shoulder
– Subacromial shoulder pain
These pathways have been developed by BESS members who are leaders in research and treatment in their expert areas. The pathways have been developed with the clinician and patient in mind and Mr Brownson is delighted to have been the lead author for Traumatic anterior shoulder instability and the co-author for the frozen shoulder pathway and subacromial shoulder pain.

Mr Brownson invited to lecture at the Arthrex Shoulder Symposium in Munich
On 13th November 2015, Peter Brownson was invited to lecture at the Arthrex Shoulder Symposium in Munich. The meeting involved approximately 30 key opinion leaders from the United Kingdom. Peter Brownson was invited to talk on ˜Knotless Instability Repair in Shoulder Surgery™. The meeting brought together the key opinion leaders to talk about the current hot topics in shoulder surgery. There were a large number of surgical demonstrations as well as round table discussions.
On Mon 16th November 2015 Peter Brownson and Jo Gibson (Specialist Physiotherapist) held an afternoon seminar focusing on on current trends in the management of rotator cuff problems and shoulder instability. The seminar was hosted by N -Core (The National Centre of Rehabilitation Education) and was held at the Royal Derby Hospital. The aim of the afternoon was to provide an overview of the current thinking on the management of these common shoulder conditions and was aimed principally at physiotherapists, particularly those specialising in shoulder and elbow rehabilitation. There were approximately 100 delegates at the meeting from all over the UK with the Midlands being particularly well represented. A similar meeting is planned for 2016.
